Why purchase this Early Releases 2019-P Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Proof Silver Dollar Coin?
The U.S. Mint issued this 2019 commemorative coin in tribute to the 50th Anniversary of the historic Apollo 11 manned landing on the moon. The 38.1 mm diameter proof coin is uniquely domed in shape, struck from 0.8594 Troy oz. of .999 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint.
Exciting Designs Enhanced by the Coin's Curved Surfaces
The impression of an astronaut's boot print on the lunar surface is depicted on the concave obverse, with "MERCURY," "GEMINI" and "APOLLO" stretching above between emblems representing phases of the moon. The design by Gary Cooper and Joseph Menna includes the additional inscriptions "LIBERTY," "2019," "P" and "IN GOD WE TRUST."
Designed by Phebe Hemphill, astronaut Buzz Aldrin's helmet visor stretches across the domed reverse surface, framing the distorted reflections of the American flag, lunar lander and fellow astronaut Neil Armstrong. Inscribed "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "ONE DOLLAR" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
