Why buy this 2019-P 50th Anniversary Apollo 11 Commemorative Silver Dollar?
Be a part of the U.S Mint's celebration of one of the greatest accomplishments in human history with this Apollo 11 Silver Dollar. The coin was one of seven issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of man's first visit to the moon, which was not just a coup in space exploration, but also a major American psychological victory in the Cold War. Struck from 26.73 g of .999 fine silver, this coin bears the "P" mint mark of the Philadelphia Mint. Along with its proof counterpart, it is part of a maximum mintage of 400,000 pieces. The Apollo 11 coins are just the second ever domed releases from the US Mint.
Poignant Moonwalk Design by Phebe Hemphill
The obverse design was created by Gary Cooper and sculpted by Joseph Menna. It features a single footprint on the surface of the moon, which calls to mind the famous words of Neil Armstrong: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Cooper pays homage to the NASA programs that led up to the Apollo 11 mission by including their names, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," along the rim at the top with images of the moon in various phases.
Phebe Hemphill's reverse design comes from part of a photograph that was taken during the first lunar visit. The convex curvature of the coin replicates the shape of Aldrin's space helmet, which dominates this face. The visor is the largest part of the helmet, and it reflects Neil Armstrong standing between the American flag and the lunar module. "ONE DOLLAR" is inscribed within the visor, while "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) are inscribed on other parts of the helmet.
Impeccable MS70 FR with Black Core Holder
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) set this coin in a sleek black core, which many collectors prefer to the more traditional white. The grading company awarded the piece their highest grade, Mint State 70, which is given exclusively to coins that are in perfect condition as seen under 5x magnification. They also certified the coin First Releases, a designation that is given to coins that were received for grading no more than 30 days after their initial mint releases.
