Why add this 50th Anniversary 2019-P Apollo 11 Commemorative Silver Dollar to your collection?
In 1969, NASA landed men on the moon for the first time, accomplishing something that was long thought impossible. In doing so, they also scored a major American victory in the Cold War's Space Race. The U.S Mint is marking the 50th anniversary of that accomplishment with seven commemorative coins, including this Clad Proof Half Dollar. This piece was struck at the San Francisco Mint and bears that mint's "S" mint mark. Along with the uncirculated half dollar, the coin is part of a combined mintage of 750,000 pieces.
Poignant Neil Armstrong Design by Phebe Hemphill
Gary Cooper's artwork was selected from among those submitted in a contest for the obverse design. Sculpted by Joseph Menna, the image features a single footprint on the surface of the moon. The image captures the sentiment expressed in Neil Armstrong's famous quote, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," the names of the three NASA programs that led up to the moon landing, arch over the image. They are joined by images of the moon in various phases. Other inscriptions on this face include the date, "2019," and "LIBERTY."
Phebe Hemphill's reverse design comes from a portion of a famous photograph taken during the Apollo 11 moon landing. The convex design reflects the shape of Buzz Aldrin's helmet, which dominates this face. The bulk of the helmet is the visor, which shows a clear reflection of Neil Armstrong standing between the lunar module and the American flag. The coin's face value, "HALF DOLLAR," is inscribed within the visor, while other parts of the helmet bear the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one).
