Why purchase this 2019-P 50th Anniversary Apollo 11 Commemorative Silver Dollar?

The U.S Mint marks the 50th anniversary of one of the greatest achievements in human history with this Apollo 11 Commemorative Silver Dollar. 2019 marks a half century since man first set foot on the moon. The achievement marked a major victory for the United States in its Cold War Space Race with the Soviet Union. Along with six other coins issued to mark the occasion, this coin marks just the second ever domed release from the U.S Mint. Along with a Proof Silver Dollar, this coin is part of a joint mintage of 400,000 pieces. It was struck from 26.73 g of .999 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint, which is represented by a "P" mint mark.

Moving Footprint Design by Gary Cooper

A submission by Gary Cooper won a design competition for the obverse. It consists of the names of the three NASA programs that led up to the moon landing, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," along with images of the moon in various stages arching over a single footprint in the surface of the moon. The design calls to mind Neil Armstrong's famous quote, which was heard on televisions around the world. Among the other inscriptions on this face are the date, "2019," and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST."

Phebe Hemphill designed and sculpted the reverse. The convex shape is intended to replicate the curvature of Buzz Aldrin's space helmet, which dominates this face. Taken from part of a photograph from the lunar landing, the image shows Neil Armstrong standing between the American flag and the lunar module reflected on the visor of Aldrin's helmet. The coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR," is inscribed within the visor, while "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) are inscribed above and below it, respectively.
