Why buy this 5 oz. Silver Proof 2019-P Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative Dollar?
The U.S Mint marks the 50th anniversary of one of the greatest achievements in human history, man's first landing on the moon, with this 5 oz Silver Dollar Proof, just one part of a seven coin series. Together, the coins mark just the second time that the U.S Mint has issued domed pieces. This coin is perfect for those interested in space exploration, as well as any patriotic American, given that the landing was a major American victory in the Space Race of the Cold War. This coin was struck from 5 oz. of .999 fine silver and bears the "P" mint mark of the Philadelphia Mint. It is part of a mintage of 100,000 pieces.
Powerful Lunar Visit Design by Phebe Hemphill
The coin's obverse features the artwork of Gary Cooper. The names of the three programs leading up to the Apollo 11 moon landing, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," are inscribed along the rim among images of the moon in different phases. At the center is a single footprint on the surface of the moon, a small yet poignant symbol of the event. Other inscriptions on this face include the date, "2019," and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST."
Phebe Hemphill designed and sculpted the reverse image, which was taken from part of a famous photograph from the Apollo 11 moon landing. The convex image imitates the curvature of the visor on Buzz Aldrin's space helmet, which dominates the design. The reflection in the visor shows the American flag, Neil Armstrong, and the lunar module. "ONE DOLLAR," the coins face value, is inscribed within the visor, while "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) are inscribed on other parts of the helmet.
