Why order this 5 oz. Silver Dollar Proof 2019-P Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative?
In 1969, NASA landed two men on the moon with the Apollo 11 mission. The achievement was a seminal accomplishment in space exploration and a major psychological victory in the United States's Space Race with the Soviet Union. Now, the US Mint is celebrating the occasion with its second ever issued of domed coins. This 5 oz. Proof was struck on a planchet of .999 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint and features that mint's "P" mint mark. It is part of a mintage of just 100,000 pieces, The coin is a fantastic choice for patriotic Americans, as well as anyone who is interested in astronomy and exploration.
Poignant Footprint Design by Gary Cooper
The mint held a contest for the obverse design, and a submission by Gary Cooper emerged victorious. Sculpted by Joseph Menna, the design consists of the names of the NASA missions that led up to the moon landing, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," arching over a single footprint on the surface of the moon. Also integrated into the design are images of the moon in various phases. Additional inscriptions on this face read, "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "2019."
Phebe Hemphill's reverse design is convex to make it appear similar to the shape of the helmet on Buzz Aldrin's spacesuit, which fills almost this entire face. In the helmet of the visor is the reflection of Neil Armstrong standing on the moon between the American flag and the lunar module. The image was taken from a photograph that was snapped on the moon. "ONE DOLLAR" is inscribed on the visor, while "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) are included on other parts of the helmet.
