Why order this 5 oz. Silver Proof 2019-P Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative Dollar?
Heft and history come together in this 5 oz. Silver Apollo 11 Commemorative Proof. The coin is among seven issued by the U.S Mint to commemorate the 50th anniversary of man's first visit to the moon. The accomplishment was both a seminal accomplishment in space exploration and an important victory for the United States in its Space Race against the Soviet Union. The seven coins are domed, making them just the second such issues from the U.S Mint. This piece is largest among them by weight. It bears the "P" mint mark of the Philadelphia Mint, where it was struck on a five ounce planchet of .999 fine silver. Just 100,000 pieces were authorized for this mintage.
Awe Inspiring Footprint Design by Gary Cooper
Most people consider footprints mundane, but Gary Cooper's depiction of a single footprint on the lunar surface is anything but, as it perfectly encapsulates one of the most important moments in human history. The work of countless people made the moment possible, and Cooper honors them with the inclusion of the three NASA programs that led up to the moon landing, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," along the top portion of the rim. There are also renderings of the moon in different phases.
Patriotic Americans can't help but be moved by Phebe Hemphill's reverse design. Neil Armstrong stands between the American flag and the lunar module. Uniquely, that image is depicted in the visor of Buzz Aldrin's space helmet. The curvature of the coin replicate the curvature of the visor. One inscription, "ONE DOLLAR," is included within the visor, while two more, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) appear on other parts of the helmet.
