Why purchase this 5 oz. Silver 2019-P Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative Dollar Proof?
Measuring three inches in diameter, this 5 oz. Silver Dollar Proof is the largest among the seven coins that the U.S Mint issued, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of man's first visit to the moon. The coin is perfect for collectors who are interested in space exploration, as well as patriotic Americans who take pride in the important Cold War victory. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint from 5 oz of .999 fine silver, this coin bears a "P" mint mark on the obverse. It is part of a maximum mintage of just 100,000 pieces.
Alluring Lunar Footprint Design by Gary Cooper
The obverse features Gary Cooper's contest winning design. It consists of a single footprint on the surface of the moon, which calls to mind Neil Armstrong's famous quote, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Arching over it, interspersed with depictions of four phases of the moon, are the names of the NASA programs that made the moon landing possible, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO." They are joined by several other statutory inscriptions.
The concept for Phebe Hemphill's reverse design originated in part of a photograph that was taken during the mission's moon landing. The design features a reflection in Buzz Aldrin's space helmet, the curvature of which is echoed by the curvature of the coin. In the reflection, Neil Armstrong stands facing Aldrin with the American flag to his right (the holder's left) and the lunar module to his left. The coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR," is in the upper left of the visor.
Superb PF69 ER
This coin earned the second highest grade awarded by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), Proof 69, which means that not a single one of its very few imperfections is visible to the naked eye. The piece also received Early Releases certification, which indicates that NGC received it no more than a month after its initial mint release.
