Why purchase this Moon Mission Releases 2019-P Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative 5 oz. Silver Dollar Proof Coin?
The U.S Mint is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon mission, which landed a man on the moon for the first time. The mission was not only a major achievement in the history of exploration but also a key psychological victory for America in the Space Race with the USSR. The mission itself took place from July 16 to July 24, 1969. Coins submitted to Numismatic Guaranty Corporation's (NGC's) Florida headquarters from the dates of the 50th anniversary of the mission, i.e. July 16-24, 2019, received a special designation as Moon Mission Releases. This designation comes on a special label reserved exclusively for coins in this category. It features an astronaut standing next to an American flag on the moon.
Powerful Lunar Footprint Design by Gary Cooper
Gary Cooper's artwork won a contest to appear on the obverse. It features the names of the NASA programs that led up to the Apollo 11 program, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," at the top along with depictions of the moon in various phases. In the center is a single footprint on the surface of the moon. "LIBERTY" and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," are also included on this face.
On the reverse is a design by Phebe Hemphill that is modeled off of a famous photograph taken during the lunar visit. Neil Armstrong stands on the moon between the lunar module and the American flag. This image is reflected in the visor of Buzz Aldrin's space helmet, the curvature of which is replicated by the curvature of the coin. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "ONE DOLLAR," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" are all inscribed on this face.
Impeccable PF70 with Black Core Holder
This coin earned NGC's highest grade, Proof 70, which is given exclusively to coins that are in perfect condition as seen under 5x magnification. The coin comes set in a black core holder, which offers stunning visual contrast to the coin.

The successful Apollo 11 Mission and the landing of the first men on the Moon was a distinctly American triumph. Although the bulk of the credit rightfully goes to the nation behind the mission, other countries also made extremely valuable – and often overlooked – contributions to it.
In 1961, President John F. Kennedy challenged NASA to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade. The mission lasted eight days and landed not one, but two men, on the face of the moon. Here are some incredible, true facts about the mission.
