Why buy this Commemorative 2019-(P) American Legion 100th Anniversary Silver Dollar?
The American Legion was founded in 1919 to promote patriotism and honor, mentor youth, and provide assistance to active military members and veterans. Today, the Legion continues to carry out that mandate through such programs as American Legion Baseball and Operation Comfort Warriors. The U.S Mint has released three coins to make the 100th anniversary of the organization. Part of a mintage of 400,000 pieces, this coin was struck from 26.73 g of .999 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint, although the coin itself does not carry a Mint mark.
Powerful American Legion Designs by Paul C. Balan and Michael Gaudioso
Paul Balan designed and Renata Gordon sculpted the obverse, which features the emblem of the American Legion. The emblem is adorned by oak leaves and a lily, which commemorate the organization's foundation in Paris, France. Inscriptions on this face read, "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "2019."
The reverse represents the foundation of the Legion in Paris. Sculpted by Michael Gaudioso and designed by Patricia Lucas-Morris, it consists of an American flag crossed with an American Legion flag. In the space between them are a fleur de lis and the inscription "100 YEARS OF SERVICE." Among the other inscriptions on this face are the anniversary years, "1919" and "2019," and the coin's face value, "$1."
