The 38.1 mm diameter coin is struck from 0.8594 Troy oz. of .999 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint; no more than 400,000 will be minted in combination with its Proof companion.
Symbolic Commemorative Imagery
The American Legion's distinctive star and wreath crest is featured on the obverse along with symbols representing strength, devotion and memory, oak leaves and a lily blossom. The design by Paul C. Balan and Renata Gordon includes the inscriptions "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "2019."
A fleur-de-lis to symbolize the Legion's Paris origin is depicted on the reverse, with the inscription "100 YEARS OF SERVICE" and the flags of the U.S. and American Legion crossed below. The image credited to Patricia Lucas-Morris and Michael Gaudioso is surrounded by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1919," "2019," "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "$1."
