The New Zealand Mint begins its new Star Wars Helmets series with the famous Darth Vader helmet. Darth Vader was named the third greatest movie villain in cinematic history by the American Film Institute. He is a giant in popular culture, as casual viewers and avid Star Wars fans alike frequently reference his famous encounter with his son, Luke. Struck from 2 oz of .999 fine silver in ultra high relief, this shaped coin is part of a mintage of just 5,000 pieces. It comes in its original packaging from the New Zealand Mint.
Iconic Darth Vader Helmet Design
Virtually all collectors will recognize the obverse design, Ian Rank-Broadley's right-side portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing a tiara. The image has featured on coinage from many coins and territories for two decades. The monarch's name, "ELIZABETH II," combines with the coin's country, "NIUE," face value, "FIVE DOLLARS," and date, "2019," to encircle the image. Additional inscriptions on this face offer the coin's weight and purity, "2 OZ 999 FINE SILVER," and the Lucasfilm copyright and trademark.
Perhaps the most recognizable images from the entire Star Wars series, Darth Vader's helmet, serves as the reverse design. The coin is shape such that the helmet fills the entire face. It is complete with large eye coverings and winged portions that extend sideways at chin level.
