Why buy this 2-Coin 2019 Japan 30th Gold + Clad Proof Anniversary of Emperor Akihito's Enthronement Set?

Emperor Akihito is the 125th Emperor of Japan. He assumed the throne of the monarchy, which dates back to 660 BC, on January 7, 1989. The Japan Mint is celebrating his 30th anniversary on the throne with this two-coin set. It will be the last coin dedicated to him during his reign, as he will be abdicating the throne in April due to his advanced age. It will be the first time in over two centuries that the Emperor has stepped down. 30,000 of these sets were issued, with an additional 20,000 of the gold coins that it includes released singly. Just 3,000 of these sets have been made available outside of Japan. The gold coin was struck from 20 g of .999 fine gold.

Exquisite Phoenix Design

The gold coin's obverse features a Phoenix, which symbolizes the Emperor. According to Japanese culture, it is disrespectful to strike the Emperor's image on a coin. The cupronickel piece's obverse features the Ceremonial Carriage that carried the Imperial Couple at their wedding, the 60th anniversary of which is also in 2019. Both reverses bear the Imperial Crest of the Chrysanthemum. The Crest has long featured on the nation's coinage.
