Why order this Commemorative Clad 2019-D Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Half Dollar?
Be a part of the US Mint's celebration of one of America's biggest Cold War victories and one of mankind's most celebrated moments of exploration with this 2019-D Apollo 11 Commemorative Half Dollar. The mint released seven coins to coincide with the important anniversary, each one of them domed. These are just the second domed coins ever released by the US mint. Part of a mintage of 750,000 pieces, this coin was struck at the Denver Mint and has a "D" mint mark on the obverse.
Powerful Reflection Design
A contest was held to design the obverse, and a piece by Gary Cooper won out. At the top, images of the moon in four phases are interspersed with the names of the three NASA programs that led up to and included the lunar mission, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO." Below them is a single footprint on the moon. The footprint itself is simple, but the accomplishment of being able to make it, was once thought impossible. As such, it captures Neil Armstrong's famous quote, "One small step for man; one giant leap for mankind." Several other inscriptions are included on this face, such as the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date, "2019."
The reverse is domed to mimic the shape of the helmet of Buzz Aldrin's space suit. That helmet dominates this face, with the visor taking up most of the space. In that visor is a reflection of Neil Armstrong, who stands between the lunar module and the American flag. The image comes from a famous photograph taken on the moon. Inscriptions on this face include "HALF DOLLAR," which is in the visor, and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," which is on another part of the helmet.
Flawless MS70 FR with Moon Core Holder
This coin has been set in a holder that looks like the surface of the moon by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and comes with a reproduction of the patch worn by the crew of the Apollo 11 Mission. The piece received that grading company's highest grade, Mint State 70, which means that it is flawless as seen under 5x magnification. It was also dubbed First Releases, meaning that NGC received it no more than 30 days after the coin's initial release. When you purchase this Moon Core option, you will receive a replica of the Apollo 11 Mission Patch.
