Why buy this 50th Anniversary 2019-D Apollo 11 Commemorative Clad Half Dollar? In 2019, the US Mint celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of man's first visit to the moon with seven coins, including this clad half dollar. These coins are just the second set of domed coins that the mint has ever produced. They are perfect not only for collectors who have an interest in space exploration but also for patriotic Americans, as the lunar landing was a major American victory in the space race during the cold war. Bearing the "D" mint mark of the Denver Mint, this coin is part of a mintage of 750,000 pieces. Exquisite Reflection DesignGary Cooper's artwork won a design contest for the obverse. It features a single footprint on the surface of the moon, a simple yet powerful symbol of one of the greatest achievements in the history of mankind. Arching over the footprint are the names of the three NASA programs that built up to and included the lunar landing, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," along with depictions of the moon in various phases. Other inscriptions on the obverse include but are not limited to "2019" and "IN GOD WE TRUST." The reverse image comes from a famous photograph that was taken during the lunar visit. Neil Armstrong stands between the American flag and the lunar module on the surface of the moon. The image is depicted in a reflection on the visor of Buzz Aldrin's helmet. This convex face of the coin is intended to mirror the shape of Aldrin's helmet. "HALF DOLLAR" joins the reflection on the visor portion of the helmet, while "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) are included on other parts of the helmet above and below the visor, respectively. Flawless MS70 FDI with Moon Core HolderThis coin earned Numismatic Guaranty Corporation's (NGC's) Mint State 70 (MS70) grade, the highest available. That grade is reserved for coins that are flawless as seen under 5x magnification. NGC also certified the piece First Day of Issue (FDI), which means that it was submitted for grading through an exclusive process. The coin comes set in a moon core holder, which looks like the lunar surface, and also comes with a recreation of the patch worn on the Apollo 11 Mission.
