Why buy this Apollo 11 2019-D 50th Anniversary Commemorative Clad Half Dollar?
In 1969, NASA accomplished one of the greatest achievements in human history with its successful mission landing a man on the moon. In doing so, it also won a major victory for the United States in the Space Race of the Cold War. Now, the U.S Mint marks the 50th anniversary of the occasion with seven commemorative coins, including this clad half dollar. It is part of a joint mintage of 750,000 along with its proof counterpart.
Patriotic Neil Armstrong Design by Phebe Hemphill
The obverse features a lunar footprint design by Gary Cooper and engraved by Joseph Menna. Arching over the footprint are the names of the three NASA programs that made the moon landing possible, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO." Joining them are images of the moon in various stages. "LIBERTY," "2019," and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," are also included on this face.
Phebe Hemphill designed and sculpted the reverse, which features a portion of a famous photo taken during the Apollo 11 moon landing. The convex design is reminiscent of the shape of Buzz Aldrin's helmet. The visor of that helmet reflects Neil Armstrong standing between the American flag and the lunar module. The face value of the coin, "HALF DOLLAR," is inscribed within the visor, while "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" is inscribed above it and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) is inscribed below it.
