This is one of seven coins issued by the mint to mark the occasion. The coins are just the second domed pieces ever issued by the US Mint. An uncirculated half dollar was also issued, and the two clad half dollars have a combined mintage of 750,000 pieces. This one bears the "D" mint mark of the Denver Mint. Iconic Lunar Surface Design by Phebe HemphillThe obverse features a contest winning design by Gary Cooper. Calling to mind Neil Armstrong's quote, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," the design consists of a single footprint on the surface of the moon. Arching over the footprint are the names of the three NASA programs that made the landing possible, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," as well as images of the moon in different phases. "LIBERTY," "2019," and "IN GOD WE TRUST" are also inscribed on the obverse. Phebe Hemphill's reverse is convex to replicate the shape of Buzz Aldrin's helmet. Hemphill designed the image after a photograph taken on the moon. The image shows Neil Armstrong standing between the American flag and the lunar module in the reflection on Buzz Aldrin's helmet. The face value of the coin, "HALF DOLLAR," is inscribed within the visor, while "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) are inscribed above and below it, respectively.
