Striking Lunar Visit Design by Phebe HemphillA submission by Gary Cooper won a design contest for the obverse. it consists of a single footprint on the surface of the moon, a simple yet powerful symbol of the occasion. Arching over it are images of the moon in four phases interspersed among the names of the three NASA programs that led up to the mission, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO." "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "2019" are also included. Phebe Hemphill modeled her design after a famous photograph from the lunar landing. Neil Armstrong stands at the center with the American flag on one side and the lunar module on the other. The image appears as a reflection on the visor of Buzz Aldrin's helmet. "HALF DOLLAR" is inscribed within the visor, while "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) are included on other parts of the helmet.
