Why buy this Commemorative 2019-D Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Clad Half Dollar Coin?
This Commemorative Apollo 11 Half Dollar is the most accessible way for collectors to share in the US Mint's celebration of the 50th anniversary of the NASA mission that landed man on the moon for the first time. It is part of a group of seven coins, all domed, that the Mint issued to mark the occasion. The commemoration is important not only because of the significance of the event in terms of space exploration, but also because of its importance as a Cold War American victory. This piece bears the "D" mint mark of the Denver Mint. Along with the proof version of the coin, it is part of a mintage of 350,000.
Breathtaking Lunar Visit Design by Phebe Hemphill
Gary Cooper designed, and Joseph Menna sculpted, the obverse, where a single footprint on the surface of the moon powerfully captures at once the simplicity and profundity of Neil Armstrong's emergence from the lunar module. The Apollo 11 mission was the culmination of three NASA programs, the names of which, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," arch over the footprint with depictions of the moon in different phases. Additional inscriptions are included in the bottom half of the obverse.
Phebe Hemphill's reverse design, which she also sculpted, is convex to replicate the curvature of the equipment piece that dominates it, the visor of Buzz Aldrin's space helmet. That visor shows Neil Armstrong between the American flag and the lunar module, a symbol of the political significance of the event and a symbol of the scientific and inspirational significance of it. "HALF DOLLAR," the coin's face value, is among three inscriptions on this face.
