Why buy this 2019-D Commemorative Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Clad Half Dollar?
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Apollo 11 mission that landed man on the moon for the first time, the U.S Mint is issuing seven new commemoratives. The second ever domed issues from the mint, the coins are perfect for patriotic collectors, as well as anyone with an interest in space exploration. Struck from cupronickel at the Denver Mint, this coin is part of a joint mintage of 750,000 pieces along with its proof counterpart. It bears a "D" mint mark on the obverse.
Awe Inspiring Moon Landing Design by Phebe Hemphill
Neil Armstrong uttered the words "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" when he set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969. Gary Cooper's obverse design calls that moment to mind by featuring a single footprint on the moon. Cooper also honors the work of the three NASA programs that made the moon visit possible by including their names, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and APOLLO," along the rim.
The reverse features the design of Phebe Hemphill, who also sculpted it. The convex shape of this face replicates the curvature of the visor of Buzz Aldrin's space helmet, which takes up most of this face. In the visor, the holder can see a clear reflection of Neil Armstrong standing on the moon with the American flag on one side and the lunar module on the other. "HALF DOLLAR," which is included within the visor, is among three inscriptions on this face.
