Why add this 2019-D Commemorative Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Clad Half Dollar to your collection? The United States won one of its biggest victories of the Cold War without firing a shot on July 20, 1969, when Neil Armstrong became the first man ever to set foot on the surface of the moon. Fifty years later, the U.S Mint is commemorating the occasion with seven new pieces, which together are just the second domed coins that the mint has ever produced. This piece bears the "D" mint mark of the Denver Mint, where it was struck from cupronickel. It is part of a maximum mintage of 750,000 pieces, which also includes proofs. Patriotic Moon Walk Design by Phebe HemphillGary Cooper's artwork emerged victorious in a competition for the obverse design. Sculpted by Joseph Menna, it consists of a footprint on the surface of the moon under the names of the NASA programs that made the mission possible, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO." Also included on this face are renderings of the moon in four phases and several additional inscriptions. Phebe Hemphill designed and sculpted the reverse, basing it off of a portion of a photograph taken during the famous visit. The convex shape replicates the curvature of the piece of equipment that dominates this face, the visor of Buzz Aldrin's space helmet. In that visor is a reflection of Neil Armstrong, who stands with the American flag to one side and the lunar module to the other. "HALF DOLLAR" is inscribed in the upper left of the visor. Virtually Flawless MS69 ERAccording to the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), this coin lacks any flaws that are visible to the naked eye. That is why it earned their second highest grade, Mint State 69. It also received Early Releases certification, which indicates that a coin was submitted for grading no more than 30 days after its initial mint release.
