Why add this Commemorative Clad 2019-D Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Half Dollar to your collection?
The US Mint has issued seven coins to mark the fiftieth anniversary of man's first visit to the moon. The event was not only one of the greatest in terms of stretching what is believed to be possible, but also a major American victory in the Cold War's space race. The coins are just the second domed issues of the US Mint. This piece is one of two half dollars, which have a combined maximum mintage of 750,000 pieces. It bears the "D" mint mark of the Denver Mint and comes in GEM Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
Patriotic Helmet Reflection Design
The holder can almost hear the words of Neil Armstrong, "One small step for man; one giant leap for mankind," as they view Gary Cooper's footprint design on the obverse. The simple impression symbolizes one of the greatest events in the history of the human species. Cooper pays homage to the NASA programs that led up to the landing by including their names, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," along the top half of the rim. They are joined by depictions of the moon in different phases. Several other inscriptions, including the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," also appear on this face.
The coin is convex so that the reverse is akin to the helmet that Buzz Aldrin wore as part of his space suit. That helmet dominates this face in an image that replicates a famous photograph from the landing. The bulk of the image is a reflection in the helmet's visor. That reflection shows Neil Armstrong standing between the American flag and the lunar module. "HALF DOLLAR" is inscribed in the upper left of the visor, while "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) are inscribed on other parts of the helmet above and below the visor.
