Why buy this 2019 China 88 g Platinum Unicorn Vault Protector Proof Medal?
Share in the China Mint's celebration of the 25th anniversary of its Unicorn Series with this Platinum Unicorn Vault Protector. The medal is the first ever struck by the China Mint with a square hold in the center. Square holes were once standard in Chinese coinage so that they could be carried on strings. Because the number 8 is considered lucky in China, this piece weighs 88 g and is part of a maximum mintage of 88 pieces. It was struck from .999 fine platinum.
Striking Two Unicorns Design by Song Fei
The obverse design puts the holder atop one of the world's most famous landmarks, the Great Wall of China. Look up at the structure as it climbs one of northern China's many mountains. An inscription along the rim at the top offers this medal's weight and purity. It reads, "88G PT .999."
On the reverse are two unicorns, which designer Song Fei depicts in the clouds. In the upper left is the creature as imagined in Eastern culture. A scaly coat covers the body of a goat, and curvy horns protrude from its head. The Western iteration, which is in the lower right, is one that is more familiar to Americans. It looks like an equine with a single horn extending from its forehead.
GEM Proof UC FDI with Song Fei Signed Label
Designer Song Fei hand signed the label on which Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) provided its grading information. That information includes its adjectival GEM Proof grade, as well as Ultra Cameo and First Day of Issue certifications. To be graded GEM Proof, a piece must have been struck well. UC certification indicates its heavily frosted devices and deeply mirrored fields contrast particularly sharply.
