Why order this 2019 $100 Canada 1/2 oz Gold Apollo 11 Domed 50th Anniversary Proof?
The Royal Canadian Mint followed the example of the US Mint in releasing a domed coin to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. The mission famously landed Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon, an achievement that served as a psychological turning point during the Cold War. Part of a mintage of just 700 pieces, this coin was struck from a half ounce of .9999 fine gold. It comes in its original mint packaging and will arrive in GEM Proof condition.
Stunning Astronaut on the Moon Design
The obverse features Susanna Blunt's right-side portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Unlike most other depictions of the monarch on coinage, this one shows her without a tiara or crown. The monarch does, however, wear earrings and a necklace. Her name, "ELIZABETH II," is opposite "D G REGINA" (by the Grace of God, Queen," while "CANADA" and "100 DOLLARS" round out the rim inscriptions.
The convex reverse features an astronaut standing beside the lunar module on the surface of the moon. The anniversary dates, "1969" and "2019," are inscribed on the left, while "50 YEARS ANS" (50 Years in English and French) is included on the right. On the circular frame is an inscription that is provided in Canada's two native languages, English and French. The English portion reads, "MAN HAS REACHED OUT AND TOUCHED THE TRANQUIL MOON."
