Why buy this 2019 1 oz Silver Austria Leopold Coin with Blister Pack Packaging?
When it comes to depth and breadth of history of mints, the Austrian Mint is in a category all its own. The story of its founding goes back to the Crusades and a dispute between Duke Leopold V of Austria and King Richard, "the Lioinhart," of England during the capture of the city of Acre in 1191. The year after the original dispute, Leopold took Richard prisoner while Richard was on his way home from the Crusades. Leopold demanded a hefty ransom that England raised through taxation. He used the silver to found Wiener Neustadt and the Austrian Mint. The latter was founded in 1194, and this Silver Leopold marks the mint's 825th anniversary. Part of a mintage of just 100,000 pieces, it was struck from one ounce of .999 fine silver at the Austrian Mint.
Exquisite Leopold V Design
On the obverse is a modern take of the official seal of Duke Leopold V. He dons stunning armor and is depicted on horseback. He carries with him his banner, which contributes to a powerful site as it streams behind him. "REPUBLIK OSTERREICH," the name of the issuing country, arches over the image, while inscriptions near thte bottom of it offer the coin's face value, "1,50 EURO," the date, "2019," and its weight, "1 UNZE FEINSILBER.' Note that the face value is only valid in Austria.
On the reverse is a striking closeup of Leopold V. He wears his knightly armor and a surcoat. The surcoat features his personal coat of arms. He holds his sword with both hands as banners flap behind him. "1194" is inscribed in the upper left, a reference to the year in which he founded the Austrian Mint.
