Why buy this Silver Proof 2019 €20 Austria Reaching for the Sky Dream of Flight?
Throughout nearly all of human history, men have dreamed of flying through the air. In many cases, this was thought to be reserved for the gods. Now, the Austrian Mint begins a new series celebrating the history of Reaching for the Sky with a new four coin series. This first issue in the series was struck from 22.42 g of .925 sterling silver. It is part of a mintage of 30,000 pieces.
Powerful Early Flight Designs
The focal point of the obverse is Icarus, who wears a winged flight contraption by Leonard da Vinci. In the background is a balloon, which was the creation of the Montgolfier brothers. The ornate balloon captures the imagination of the holder just as the dream of flight itself does. "REPUBLIK OSTERREICH" (Republic of Austria) is inscribed along the rim, while the coin's face value, "20 EURO," and date, "2019," are inscribed below.
The reverse design comes from 19th century Prussia. It features Otto Lilienthal using one of his gliders. A crowd of amazed onlookers stands in awe of his wondrous flight. The name of the device, "STURMFLUGEL MODELL," is inscribed at the bottom.
Impeccable PF70 UC with Exclusive Austria Label
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) awarded this coin a Proof 70 grade, their highest, which means that it is flawless as seen under 5x magnification. The grading company also certified the coin Ultra Cameo. UC coins bear particularly sharp contrasts between heavily frosted devices and deeply mirrored fields. This information comes on an exclusive Austria label, which bears the issuing nation's flag.
