Why buy this Shipwreck Series 2019 $100 Australia Triangular 1 oz Gold Batavia?

This Gold Batavia is the first issue in the Royal Australian Mint's new Australian Shipwreck Series. The coin marks one of the darkest tragedies in maritime history, not so much because of what happened in the wreck itself as because of what transpired afterwards. The ship wrecked on its maiden voyage on June 4, 1629. About 40 of its 341 passengers drowned or otherwise died as a direct result of the wreck. Francisco Pelsaert, the ship's commander, set off to Batavia (Jakarta) for help, leaving Jeronimus Cornelisz in charge. Cornelisz's plans to pillage the ship's treasures led to mutiny, several murders among the survivors prior to rescue. After help arrived, there were trials, executions, and other punishments of the guilty. Part of a mintage of just 250 pieces, this coin was struck from 1 oz of .9999 fine gold and remains in GEM Brilliant Uncirculated condition.

Striking Batavia Designs

The obverse is dominated by two scenes from the Batavia's history. In the background, the ship lays on its side in the water. In the foreground, the two sides of survivors fight on the beach. Above is a right-side portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing her Royal Diamond Diadem. The portrait, which was designed by Jody Clark, is joined by inscriptions of the name of the monarch, "ELIZABETH II," the name of the issuing country, "AUSTRALIA," and the date, "2019."

On the reverse is a duel scene of the Batavia. One way of looking at it shows the ship sailing on the high seas, supported by gusts of wind filling its sails. Flipped, the holder sees the ship in its final position, capsized. It is in this second position that the holder can read the three lines of inscriptions above. They note the year of the wreck, "1629," the weight and purity of the coin, "1 OZ .999 AG," and the name of the ship, "BATAVIA."
