Why buy this 50th Anniversary Commemorative 2019 Apollo 11 Silver Dollar Proof?
Be a part of the US Mint's celebration of one of man's greatest accomplishments and one of America's biggest Cold War victories with this 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Mission Commemorative Silver Dollar Proof. The coin is one of seven issued to mark the occasion. These coins mark just the second time that the US Mint has issued a domed coin. Part of a mintage of 400,000 pieces, this coin was struck on a .999 fine silver, 26.73 g planchet at the Philadelphia Mint.
Patriotic Reflective Lunar Surface Designs
Gary Cooper's artwork won a design contest for the obverse. It features a footprint on the surface of the moon along with the names of NASA programs that led up to the famous landing. Interspersed with images of the moon in various phases, they read, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO." Other inscriptions on this face are "2019," "LIBERTY," and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST."
The reverse is the convex section of the coin. Domed to replicate the shape of its subject, it is a recreation of Buzz Aldrin's helmet from a picture taken during the first lunar landing. The image reflected in Aldrin's visor consists, from left to right, of the American flag, Neil Armstrong, and the lunar module on the surface of the moon. "ONE DOLLAR" is inscribed above the flag on the visor portion of the coin, while "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" is inscribed above the visor and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) is inscribed below it.
Impeccable PF70 FDI with Moon Core Holder
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) awarded this coin their highest grade, Proof 70 (PF70), which indicates that it is in perfect condition even as seen under 5x magnification. NGC also designated the coin First Day of Issue (FDI), which means that it was submitted through an exclusive process. The coin comes set in a unique core that appears similar to the surface of the moon and is also accompanied by a reproduction of the Apollo 11 Mission Patch!
