Why order this 2019 5 oz. Silver Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative Dollar Proof?
This 5 oz. Silver Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative is one of seven coins that the US Mint has issued to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of man's first visit to the moon. The seven coins mark just the second time that the US Mint has issued domed pieces. This coin is perfect for patriotic collectors given that the lunar landing was America's marquis victory in the space race during the Cold War. Struck from five ounces of .999 fine silver, this coin bears the "P" mint mark of the Philadelphia Mint. It is part of a mintage of 100,000 pieces across all the 5 oz. silver options being offered by the US Mint.
Inspiring Footprint Design by Gary Cooper
A contest was held for the obverse design, and Gary Cooper's artwork emerged victorious. It features a footprint on the lunar surface, a simple yet powerful symbol of one of man's greatest accomplishments. Arching over the image are four images of the moon in various states and the words "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," the names of the NASA programs that made the lunar landing possible. Other obverse inscriptions include but are not limited to the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date, "2019."
The reverse is convex to replicate the shape of Buzz Aldrin's helmet, which dominates this face. It comes from a famous photograph taken on the moon. The reflection in Aldrin's visor depicts Neil Armstrong standing between the American flag and the lunar module. Also on the visor is an inscription of the coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR." Inscriptions on other parts of the helmet read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one).
Impeccable PF70 ER with Moon Core Holder
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) set this coin in a holder that looks like the surface of the moon. They also awarded the coin their highest grade, Proof 70, which is given only to coins that lack even a single imperfection that can be seen under 5x magnification. The grading company further certified the coin Early Releases (ER), which means that they received it within 30 days of its initial release from the mint. When you purchase this 5 oz. Apollo coin, you will also receive an imitation Apollo 11 mission patch!
