Why buy this Commemorative 2019 Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Silver Dollar?
This domed commemorative silver dollar gives you the opportunity to be a part of the celebration of one of the greatest accomplishments in human history, the 50th anniversary of man's first landing on the moon. The coin celebrates the Apollo 11 mission and other missions that led up to it. This commemorative coin was struck from 26.73g of .999 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint and is part of a total mintage of 400,000 pieces. It is also part of just the second ever domed issue produced by the US Mint.
Striking Footprint Design by Gary Cooper
A nationwide competition for the obverse design resulted in the selection of Gary Cooper's lunar footprint design, which was sculpted by Joseph Menna. The design features a footprint under the inscriptions "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," all NASA missions that led up to the milestone. The names of those programs are joined by images of the moon in various phrases. Other inscriptions on this face include "LIBERTY," the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date, "2019."
The reverse is the convex face, which replicates a photo taken of Buzz Aldrin's helmet. The reflection in the visor, which dominates this face, includes the American flag and the lunar module, along with Aldrin's fellow astronaut Neil Armstrong. The face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR," is inscribed at the top of the visor, while the top of the mask bears the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the bottom has the words "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one.)
Impeccable MS70 FR with Moon Core Holder
This coin comes set in a moon core holder, which looks like the lunar surface. It was graded Mint State 70 by the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That grade is reserved for coins that are in perfect condition as seen under 5x magnification. This piece was also labeled First Releases, which indicates that it was received for grading no more than thirty days after its initial release from the mint. Along with this stunning Moon Core coin, you will receive a replica of the Mission Patch worn by the astronauts on the Apollo 11 Mission.
