Historic American Designs
Adolph Weinman designed this timeless Walking Liberty image used on the obverse of the American Silver Eagle. Liberty is shown in full length, striding with confidence across the rocky American landscape. She holds the U.S. flag, as well as symbols of strength and prosperity, in the form of oak and laurel branches. The reverse of the coin features an image from the renowned John Mercanti, the U.S. Mint's now retired 12th Chief Engraver. The image is a strong Heraldic Eagle carrying arrows and an olive branch. Overhead is an inverted triangle of thirteen stars, representing the original colonies from which these United States were born.
