Why buy this 2019 $50 American 1 oz Gold Eagle?

The American Gold Eagle series began in 1986 and quickly emerged as one of the world's favorite gold bullion coins. The popularity of the series stems from its iconic obverse design and the fact that it was for a long time the only gold bullion coin backed for weight and purity by the United States government. The coin was struck from one ounce of .9167 fine gold at the West Point Mint.

Traditional Saint-Gaudens Design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens

The obverse features the highly acclaimed Saint-Gaudens design, which bears the name of the man who created it, Augustus Saint-Gaudens. It was revived for the Gold Eagle series after first featuring on the double eagle from 1907-1933. Widely considered one of the most beautiful designs in numismatic history, it features Liberty standing at the center in a strong wind, which blows her garment and hair. She holds her torch, a symbol of freedom, in front of her and an olive branch, a symbol of peace, off to the side. She stands against a backdrop of the rays of the morning sun, which is just beginning to emerge from beyond the horizon. A miniature rendering of the Capitol Dome is included to the left, and fifty stars, four more than appeared on the original design, represent the states along the rim.

Miley Busiek created the reverse design for the Gold Eagle series. It features a family of eagles. The male is returning to his nest carrying an olive branch. In the nest, his mate looks towards him as she nestles their young. Among the inscriptions on this face are the coin's weight, "1 OZ FINE GOLD," its face value,
