Why buy this 1/10 oz Gold 2019 $5 American Eagle?
The Gold Eagle series started in 1986 and quickly became the world's favorite gold bullion coin. For twenty years, it was the only gold bullion coin backed for weight and purity by the United States government. It also featured - and continues to feature - what is universally recognized as one of the finest designs in the history of numismatics. This coin continues that rich tradition. It was struck from a tenth ounce of .9167 fine gold at the West Point Mint. As the smallest coin in the issue, it is the most accessible to collectors on budgets.
Exquisite Saint-Gaudens Design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens
The obverse design of Augustus Saint-Gaudens first appeared on the double eagle in 1907 and remained there until 1933. Because the design earned a reputation as the most stunning ever to appear on an American coin, it was brought back for the Gold Eagle series in 1986. At the center, Liberty stands confidently with her torch of freedom in one hand and an olive branch, a symbol of peace, in the other. She is the picture of confidence as she poses with one foot elevated upon a stone while a strong wind blows her hair and garment. The rays of the morning sun in the background make her appear larger than life. Also included in the design are a miniature rendering of the Capitol Dome and fifty stars, which represent the states along the rim. Stars have been added to account for the newest states since the design debuted in 1907, when there were 46 states.
On the reverse is an eagle family design that Miley Busiek created specifically for this series. A male eagle, which is carrying an olive branch, prepares to land in his nest. There his mate nestles their young as she watches him return. Several inscriptions spread throughout the remaining space on the coin. These include the coin's weight, "1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD," its face value, "5 DOLLARS," and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST."
Impeccable MS70 FDI with Black Core Holder
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) set this coin in a black core holder, which makes the coin stand out in the hand. The grading company also awarded the coin its highest grade, Mint state 70, which is only given to coins that are perfect as seen under 5x magnification. The coin has been certified First Day of Issue, which indicates that it was submitted through an exclusive process.
