Why buy this 2019 $5 American 1/10 oz Gold Eagle?
America's oldest ongoing gold bullion series continues with this American Gold Eagle. The coin continues a tradition that started in 1996 and has since become the world's favorite gold bullion coin. Many love it for its extraordinary designs, while it appeals to others because of its backing for weight and purity by the US government. This piece was struck on a 1/10 oz planchet of .9167 fine gold at the West Point Mint.
Historic Liberty Design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens
The obverse design has been adapted from the design of Augustus Saint-Gaudens that first appeared on the double eagle. Liberty stands at the center with her hair and garment blowing in a strong wind. She strikes a confident pose with one foot elevated upon a rock. She holds her torch, a symbol of freedom, in her right hand and an olive branch, a symbol of peace, in her left. Behind her, the rays of the morning sun make her appear larger than life. Fifty stars encircle the image along the rim.
Miley Busiek's reverse design honors America's national bird. A male eagle carries an olive branch in his talons as he returns to his nest, where his mate and their nestlings away. Several inscriptions spread throughout the remaining space, including the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the coin's face value, "5 DOLLARS."
