Why purchase this 1/10 oz Gold 2019 $5 American Eagle?
This smallest of four American Gold Eagles offers even collectors on budgets the opportunity to share in this rich tradition. The Gold Eagle series began in 1986 in the wake of the re-legalization of private gold ownership. It quickly rose to prominence on account of its stunning designs and the fact that it is backed for weight and purity by the American government. This piece was struck at the West Point Mint on a 1/10 oz planchet of .9167 fine gold.
Patriotic Liberty Design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens
The obverse features the design of Augustus Saint-Gaudens that first appeared on the double eagle in 1907. Named for the man who created it, it features Liberty holding her torch, a symbol of freedom, in one hand and an olive branch, a symbol of peace, in the other. She faces the holder with her long hair and loose garment blown by a strong breeze. Behind her, the rays of the morning sun make for a majestic backdrop. Fifty stars along the rim represent the current states, an adaptation from the original design, which included just forty-six.
On the reverse is an eagle family design by Miley Busiek. A male eagle returns to his family carrying an olive branch. His mate tends to their young while watching his return. The remaining space bears several inscriptions, including the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the coin's face value, "5 DOLLARS."
