Why add the Charles Barber's Dragon Pattern 1 oz. Silver Medal NGC GEM BU to your collection?
This Charles Barber Dragon Pattern 1 oz. Silver Medal achieved the GEM BU grade from Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). It was minted by the Shanghai Mint through an exclusive arrangement with ModernCoinMart and the Smithsonian Institution. The medal was struck on a 1 oz. .9999 fine silver blank. The history behind this issue is fantastic. Szechuan Province in China was in need of new coinage around the turn of the 20th century. The government there purchased coin presses from a New Jersey company and arranged for U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Charles Barber to create dies. Only a few pattern coins were struck with the original dies. The originals are now on display, on loan to the Smithsonian while a separate set resides at the Shanghai Mint Museum. The Szechuan facility flooded and subsequently sustained damage to the presses and dies. The presses were repaired but the dies were irreparably damaged. This medal is an authorized reproduction of the Barber issue.
Barber's Dragon Design
