Why purchase this authenticated First Day of Issue 2018-W Proof Gold American Buffalo?

The U.S. Mint's introduction of the American Gold Buffalo series in 2006 represented the third time the iconic Indian Head and Buffalo designs by James Earle Fraser were struck onto American coinage. The design originated in 1913 with the issue of the Buffalo Nickel. Its second appearance occurred in 2001 with the release of the single year issue Commemorative Silver Dollar. This 2018-W Proof Gold Buffalo was struck at the West Point Mint from 1 Troy oz. of .9999 fine gold.

Early 20th Century Design

Fraser's rendition of a Native American is featured on the obverse, believed to be inspired by the facial characteristics of three real-life American Indian Chiefs. Inscribed "LIBERTY," "2018" and "W."

Black Diamond, a Central Park Zoo American buffalo that lived in the early 1900's is portrayed standing on the reverse. Inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "$50."
