Why purchase this Charles Barber Dragon Pattern 2018 Smithsonian 1 oz. Gold Proof Medal?
This proof medal features the artistry of U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Charles Barber, replicating a dragon design intended for use by the Chinese Province of Szechuan in 1896. Flooding at the Chinese Mint destroyed Barber's dies, and the coins were never produced. Based upon Barber's original Dragon patterns held in the Smithsonian's numismatic collection, this 2018 commemorative proof medal was struck from 1 Troy oz. of .999 fine gold at the Shanghai Mint. Mintage is limited to just 250 medallions.
Stunning Snake-Like Dragon Design
Featured on the obverse is an Asian styled forward facing dragon, its heavily scaled body curling around its fierce head. "SZECHUEN PROVINCE" curves above, with the Smithsonian logo below, between the inscriptions "ONE OUNCE" and "AU .999."
Multiple sized Chinese characters are inscribed on the reverse, which translate as the date of issue, province, weight, content and fineness.
