Why add this stunning 1/2 oz. gold GEM Proof 2018 Smithsonian Medal featuring Charles Barber's Dragon Pattern to your collection?
In 1896, the Ferracute Machine Company in New Jersey manufactured minting equipment for the Chinese Szechuan province which included coin presses and a set of newly designed dies created by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Charles Barber featuring a sensational dragon design. Unfortunately, the dies were destroyed by floodwaters in China before any coinage was produced. Modeled after the Smithsonian's original Barber dragon patterns, this 2018 commemorative proof medallion was struck by the Shanghai Mint from 1/2 Troy oz. of .999 fine gold.
Breathtaking Dragon Pattern
The obverse features the magnificently detailed twisting form of a dragon, inspired by the dollar denomination coin of the Chinese Kwangtung Province struck 1890-1908. Inscribed "SZECHUEN PROVINCE" above, with "HALF OUNCE" and "AU .999" below, separated by a tiny Smithsonian sun logo.
Surrounded by a beaded border, Chinese characters are inscribed on the reverse which include the date, province, weight, content and metallic fineness.
