Why purchase this 2018 Silver Proof Medal Set featuring the Charles Barber Dragon design?
In 1896, the Ferracute Machine Company in New Jersey was commissioned to provide the Chinese Szechuan province with minting equipment and coin dies. The dies featuring a dragon design created by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Charles Barber were never used due to damage caused by flooding in the Chinese facility. This gorgeous set includes five commemorative medals: 1 oz., 1/2 oz., 1/4 oz., 1/10 oz. and 1/20 oz., each struck from .999 fine silver in 2018 with Barber's Dragon design at the Shanghai Mint.
Amazingly Detailed Dragon
The medallions share a common obverse, depicting an incredibly detailed dragon encircled by a stylized cloud design, with the Smithsonian logo below. Each medal is inscribed with "SZECHUEN PROVINCE," "AG .999" and appropriate weight.
Each reverse features an array of elegant Chinese lettering, representing the year of issue, province, weight, content and fineness of the medal.
Immaculate Proof Set with Smithsonian Labels
Each medal in this 2018 Smithsonian Charles Barber's Dragon 5-Piece Silver Proof Medal Set has been graded a flawless Proof 70 by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). The medallions are each perfectly struck, featuring incredible visual contrast between the frosted design elements and mirrored fields, earning the additional designation of Ultra Cameo (UC). The proofs are individually encapsulated in NGC protective holders accompanied by a Smithsonian themed certification label.
