Why purchase this Light Finish Silver Reverse Proof 2018-S Kennedy Half Dollar?
In honor of the San Francisco Mint's 50th year of producing proof coinage, the U.S. Mint released a 10-coin Silver Reverse Proof Set. Shortly after the set's July 2018 release, an unexpected variety was discovered. In some of the 200,000 sets issued, the Kennedy Half Dollar obverse features a lower contrast finish than a traditional reverse proof. This Kennedy Half Dollar from the set, struck from 0.36169 Troy oz. of .900 fine silver, is of the Reverse Proof variety with a "Light Finish."
Design of the Kennedy Half Dollar
The obverse features a design by Gilroy Roberts, portraying Kennedy in a left facing pose. Inscribed "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "2018" and "S." A heraldic eagle modeled after the United States Presidential Seal is centered on the reverse, created by Frank Gasparro. The emblem is surrounded by "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "HALF DOLLAR" and fifty stars.
