The U.S. Mint issued a Silver Reverse Proof set to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of annual proof set production at the San Francisco Mint in 2018. Included in the set was this Copper-Plated Zinc Lincoln Cent struck with a spectacular Reverse Proof finish for the first time since the inception of the series in 1909. Mintage of the complete sets was limited to 200,000, all of which quickly sold out at the Mint.
Design of the Lincoln Shield Cent
The obverse features the portrait of Abraham Lincoln, as designed by Victor D. Brenner. Inscribed "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "2018" and "S." The Union Shield of the Civil War is depicted on the reverse, draped with a scroll inscribed "ONE CENT." The design created by Lyndall Bass and Joseph Menna includes the additional inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
