Why purchase this 2018-P Block Island National Wildlife Refuge 5 oz. Silver specimen America the Beautiful quarter?
The 5th and final 2018 dated issue of the U.S. Mint's America the Beautiful series, representing the 45th release of the series, is a tribute to Rhode Island's Block Island National Wildlife Refuge. The matte-like Specimen finish coin is minted especially for collectors, struck from 5 Troy oz. of .999 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint, featuring a "P" Mint mark to differentiate it from the bullion issue.
Iconic View of a Block Island Landmark
Block Island's historic North Lighthouse, located on the Cow Cove shoreline since 1829, is depicted on the reverse, with an impressively detailed black-crowned night-heron in flight above. Designed by Chris Costello and Phebe Hemphill, the image is encircled by the inscriptions "RHODE ISLAND," "BLOCK ISLAND," "2018" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM," with ".999 FINE SILVER 5.0 OUNCE" on the coin's smooth edge.
Sculptor John Flanagan's 1932 portrait of George Washington is centered on the obverse. Inscribed "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "P" and "QUARTER DOLLAR."
