The reverse features a German Shepard, colorized with realistic shades of brown and gold, lying in a field of grass beside her pup. The design by Perth Mint designer Ing Ing Jong includes engraved Chinese peony flowers above, accompanied by the Chinese character for Dog, the Mint mark "P," and the inscribed title "YEAR OF THE DOG."

The obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, encircled by the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II," "AUSTRALIA," "1/4 OZ 9999 AG," "2018" and "25 CENTS."
