The reverse, created by Perth Mint Designer Ing Ing Jong, depicts a cluster of Chinese peony flowers and the Chinese character for dog hovering above a beautifully detailed German Shepherd and its young lounging in a field of grass. "YEAR OF THE DOG" inscribed below, the Perth Mint's "P" Mint mark at right.
The right facing likeness of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is featured on the obverse, as designed by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. Inscriptions include "ELIZABETH II," "AUSTRALIA" and "2018," along with the coin's weight, purity and denomination.
