Why order this High Relief 2018-P $8 Australia 5 oz Silver Koala Proof?
In 2007, the Perth Mint released its first ever Silver Koala. Since then, the coin has emerged as a favorite among collectors, thanks in large part to its adorable designs, which change every year. Proof Koalas are particularly attractive. This 5 oz. version is part of a very limited mintage of just 500 pieces. It was struck from .9999 fine silver and bears the Perth Mint's iconic "P" mint mark on the left side of the reverse.
Adorable Koala Design by Natasha Muhl
The coin's obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Rank-Broadley shows the monarch in right-side profile wearing a tiara in the image, which appeared on Australian coinage for two decades. She is encircled by three sets of rim inscriptions, her name, "ELIZABETH II," the coin's country, "AUSTRALIA," and its face value, "8 DOLLARS."
Natasha Muhl's reverse design shows a koala climbing out on the branch of a eucalyptus tree. The up close perspective of the design shows the creature in fine detail. The design is encircled by a rim frame that contains two sets of inscriptions, "AUSTRALIAN KOALA" at the top and "2018 5 OZ 9999 SILVER" at the bottom.
