Why purchase this 2018 Netherlands Lion Dollar Silver Proof?
The Leeuwendaalder (Lion Dollar) was introduced in the province of Holland in the late 16th century, beginning a minting trend that spread into the other Dutch provinces in the 17th century. In 2017, the Royal Dutch Mint introduced a commemorative series with designs replicating the original Dutch coinage. This second release of the series revives the design of the province of Zeeland, struck from 1 Troy oz. of .9999 fine silver, its mintage limited to 5,000.
Incredibly Detailed Imagery
The inscriptions "MO NO ARG ORDIN ZEL," (New Silver Coin of the Standard of Zeeland) and "2018" encircle the image of a knight standing behind a shield on the obverse.
Imagery from the Knight's shield is enlarged on the reverse, depicting a heraldic lion above a pattern of waves. The symbol representing the province of Zeeland is surrounded by the inscription "DOMINE SERVA NOS PERMIUS" (Lord, save us that we do not perish), which is the motto of the province.
