While the U.S. Mint has struck a wide variety of coins over the years, there are also a number that were designed but never made it to production. The Half Union is one such coin. This medal was struck in 2017, it features the design that was intended for the $50 Half Union coin. This medal weighs 1 Troy oz. and is made of .999 fine silver.
Barber's Half Union Design
The obverse of this medal features one of the designs that Charles Barber created for the proposed Half Union coin. This particular design is the small head version. A portrait of Liberty can be seen here. The date "1877" is just below her.
The reverse shows a very detailed heraldic bald eagle design. There are 13 stars just above it surrounding the words "IN GOD WE TRUST." The face value is inscribed at the bottom of the design.
