Why purchase this 2017 Great Britain Nations of the Crown Silver Gilt Proof £1?
This 2017 silver proof collector's issue commemorates the first major specification change to Great Britain's £1 coin since it first entered circulation in 1983, replacing the one pound note. This beautiful twelve sided coin appears bimetallic, struck by The Royal Mint from 0.3113 Troy oz. of .925 sterling silver with an outer band plated with fine gold. The design 23.03 mm diameter coin was determined by a public design competition; the winning image submitted by fifteen-year-old David Pearce. Proof mintage of the gorgeous coin is limited to only 26,600.
Magnificent symbolic design
Pearce's reverse design depicts the floral emblems of the nations of the United Kingdom: the English rose, the Welsh leek, the Scottish thistle and the Northern Irish shamrock, blooming from a single stem encircled by a crown. Inscribed "ONE POUND," with "2017" engraved at each facet of the border.
The obverse features the profile of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as created by Royal Mint Designer Jody Clark, surrounded by "2017 ELIZABETH II, D.G. REG. F.D.," with "ONE POUND" inscribed in a repeating pattern near the coin's edge.
