Why add Specimen 70 First Day of Issue 2017 South Africa 1 oz. Silver Krugerrands with black core holders and exclusive Krugerrand labels the next addition to your collection?
There are many bullion coins issued by nations around the world today, but the longest running is the Gold Krugerrand. These were the first government issued bullion coins of the modern era, first struck in 1967.
Now 2017 has arrived, bringing the 50th anniversary of the Krugerrand. Instead of simply continuing business as usual, the South African Mint has introduced something new – 2017 Silver Krugerrands! This is the first time that Silver Krugerrands are being offered and ModernCoinMart is the official North American distributor of these coins.
This 2017 Silver Krugerrand weighs 1 Troy oz. and is made of .999 fine silver. With a limited mintage of just 1,000,000 pieces and impressive worldwide popularity, these coins may sell out fast!
The Krugerrand with a modern touch
The classic obverse and reverse Krugerrand designs are displayed on this Silver Krugerrand. However, both of them feature an improved level of detail. This was achieved by the South African Mint’s utilization of the latest technology.
Paul Kruger is still depicted on the obverse. The improved level of detail is easy to spot here, just take a look at Kruger’s beard. His face and clothes show more fine details as well. Like its gold counterpart, this side is inscribed with “SOUTH AFRICA” in both English and Afrikaans.
The reverse shows a springbok, the national animal of South Africa, in its natural environment. The additional details are very noticeable in this antelope’s fur and the landscape behind it.
This side displays most of the inscriptions. Among them are “KRUGERRAND,” “2017,” and the silver content in English and Afrikaans. In addition to the new fine details, the reverse design also features a special 50th anniversary privy. The privy reads “1967-2017 50 YEAR ANNIVERSARY.”
Specimen 70 First Day of Issue in black core
On the 2017 1 oz. Silver Krugerrand’s release date, this coin was sent directly to the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). This is why it received the very desirable First Day of Issue designation.
Once the coin arrived, it was examined with and without magnification by NGC’s team of experts. This Silver Krugerrand received the grade of Specimen 70. The grading scale used by the grading company has a maximum of 70. This grade is reserved for specimens that are completely free of post-production imperfections, even when viewed with 5x magnification.
While owning a piece of numismatic history is always appealing, this coin’s presentation is enhanced by 2 factors. One of them is a classy black core holder, that highlights the bright gleam of the silver. The other is its exclusive Krugerrand label. Aside from the grade, this label says “FIRST SILVER KRUGERRAND” and shows the South African Mint’s logo along with a springbok.
